Keystone, South Dakota is known for a kitsch small town, overpriced treats, and yes, the famed Mt. Rushmore. What it’s not getting credit for is being a nice place to run. Because well…from what I could tell, it was not. Sorry, SD – from a sincere lack of sidewalks to multiple drivers who seemed puzzled at just what it was that I was attempting to accomplish, the SD running experience left something to be desired.
So there I was, running. And to be fair, a rather pinkish sunrise was peeping up so there was scenery worth being seen. But as sidewalk gave way to nothing but roadway I eventually wound up running in circles, finally finding a small neighborhood that was a bit raggedy around the edges. The one saving grace was a family setting up for a yard sale. I merrily lapped about as they put up signs, their daughter tied balloons to posts, and their former treasures were displayed for all to consider.
