I’m addicted to motivation—not just giving it (I think my cheerleading powers have been well documented by friends, family, and numerous strangers doing mundane tasks like watering their lawn), but finding it.
Motivation struck me when I learned Ciana had run her longest distance ever a few weeks ago, and I happened to bump into her just as she had finished and got to witness the runner’s glow that accompanies such a feat. Again, I got a burst of motivation when I learned Kane used to be a personal trainer and we discussed the role of trainers and what they can help people achieve (and I got inspired to be a personal trainer because let’s face it: I love encouraging people to do something sweaty!). And then there was Lauren noting that she planned to make sure one group of her muscles was sore every day, and Mala and I discussing chopping a week’s worth of vegetables all at once so not to dirty the cutting board and knife every day.
I don’t know why I’m still surprised when the internet delivers me motivation, but I am. I bumped into the Facebook page of a girl I knew way back in high school, when we were likely both very different than we are now. She started a fitness business, and works to make people look and feel phenomenal. And her Facebook status updates for her business tend to be under-used but well worth using little quotes and tidbits of advice. Maybe it’s simply because this motivation comes from an unlikely source, but I started following her strictly because I feel like anything is possible when I read her updates.
Wow, I sound like such a sap. But it’s true. Sometimes, even those that motivate need motivation. And Maven’s Holistic Fitness gives me a little boost of that.
Here’s the thing: people often tell me I’m incredibly motivated, both in terms of my life ambitions and in terms of my dedication to running. I think it’s important to note that while some of that is internal, a lot of it comes from support from friends, and being receptive to the possibility of being motivated rather than hiding from what it can give you.
