I’m a music fiend when I’m working out. Sometimes I make elaborate playlists, sometimes I just hit shuffle on Princess Sparkles (my iPod). I love mix CDs, getting to know new albums, and simply taking the time to find harmony in both my breath and in my ears. However, I have the strangest issue when it comes to one band in particular: Taking Back Sunday.
I love running to this band. I have three albums by them (Tell All Your Friends, Louder Now, and Where You Want to Be) and their rhythm, lyrics, and the way they mix sets of lyrics over each other so it almost sounds like two different songs are being sung together is incredible. The music is complicated, emotional, a little emo, and reminds me a bit of a harder Jimmy Eats World. The way two themes will intertwine in the same song is simply astounding.
But. I kind of hate listening to this band when I’m not running. They are tolerable through my earbuds, but never in the car or just on the stereo. In fact, they almost sound like disheveled noise when I listen to them via a sound-system. Noise that is overlayed with more noise. So my question is this: Has anyone else experienced this sort of musical dissonance with a band? Are there some bands that you can only listen to at certain moments?
